This role is based within Optum. Optum is the technology and services division of UnitedHealth Group, the leading international health care company. Our team is known as Analytics – and the primary function of our team is to build data analytics and machine learning solutions and put them into production.


We have created an exciting new Analytics Development Programme targeting early careers in the four strands of data science, analytics engineering, business analysis and business Intelligence who would like to build on their academic or research experience to make a significant impact in healthcare. In this programme you will be mentored by experienced data scientists, analytics engineers, business process analysts and business intelligence developers who will guide you in driving value and efficiencies from one of the world’s richest health-care datasets. You will have access and training in the use of the latest analytics infrastructure and will partner with established engineering and production teams to see the results of your models realized on a regular basis. In the first 12 months you will be provided with an immersive training curriculum to develop the latest analytics methods and technologies while also learning about their direct application to health care data.


Our programme has four strands:


  • Data Science
    – building machine learning models to solve current healthcare challenges

  • Analytics Engineering
    – data management and deployment to get machine learning and data models into production

  • Business Analysis
    – the conduit between technical data teams and our cross-functional business partners

  • Business Intelligence
    – using data visualisation and statistics to find and share actionable insights

Key information regarding this program:


  • This full-time position will be available starting in September 2023

  • Coursework to obtain your current degree must be completed prior to start of employment

  • Degree must be awarded and verified within 6-8 weeks following the commencement date at your school

Required Qualifications:


  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Business or other technical discipline.

  • Have recent analytics experience perhaps through internships, graduate programmes or research projects or degrees.

  • Please note you must currently be eligible to work and remain indefinitely without any restrictions in the country to which you are making an application. Proof will be required to support your application.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience with technologies such as AI, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (Data Science/Analytic Engineering strands).

  • Experience with Python, R, Java, C, Scala or other programming languages (Data Science/Analytic Engineering strands)

  • Experience with Data Discovery and Visualization tools e.g. Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, Business Objects, MicroStrategy, D3/Javascript Visualization (Business Intelligence strands).

  • Experience in data manipulation with SQL, Azure, Spark and big data tools, data management and efficient storage methods (all strands

  • Effective communication style to both technical and non-technical audiences (all strands)

  • Process analysis, process improvement, project management

  • Higher degrees (PhD, MSc) or equivalent experience.
